The recycling market in Hong Kong is fragmented and inefficient. As a result only 13% of our plastic is genuinely recycled, the rest ends up in the landfill. Despite all efforts from most consumers, who leave all their plastic in recycling bins, most of that plastic is not recyclable. This is because a lack of knowledge of most people about plastic and recycling. There are 7 types of plastic and only a few are recyclable. Contaminated plastic (food residue, labels still on) is mostly not recycled in Hong Kong. Mixed plastic (e.g. caps on bottles) is not recycled because we don't have the manpower or technology to remove those caps. In Hong Kong we use 5 Mn bottles per day!
