Genuinely not Leather provides a solution to GHG emissions caused by the leather industry by making handbags made from sustainable fabrics. The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of humanity’s carbon emissions and the process of converting raw skin into leather is chemically intensive. This environmental impact combined with the unethical practices of the fast fashion industry, made us believe that there was a need to change. GnL’s purpose is designed to align with the UN SDGs, including, climate action, responsible production and consumption, decent working conditions and the prevention of discrimination. We achieve this by making handbags from fabrics using the cork bark, teak leaves & recycled plastic bottles and minimise the use of crude oil derivatives such as PVC and PU that are used by most of our competitors. We believe that offering bags ethically made from sustainable fabrics at an affordable and accessible price is our key competitive advantage.
Our logo is designed to resemble a fingerprint with a delicate heart in the centre, the brand’s initials, GnL, form the lines of the fingerprint. Our handbags help reduce carbon footprint by 1/3rd as compared to animal leather by using cork fabric is made from cork oak teak leaves and recycled RPET fabric. Our Teak Leaf Collection is manufactured by a factory that employs artisans from tribal villages around Chiang Mai and follow fair-trade ethical manufacturing practices. We have partnered with ‘One Tree Planted’ to plant one tree for each sale we make. We are members of the ‘No Issue Eco Packaging Alliance’. Our mailers are compostable and our tissue wrapping is recyclable.
