THE COMPANY
August Robotics is a start-up company which builds bespoke robotic solutions to augment and enhance the day-to-day lives of ordinary people and businesses.
We believe that over the next generation, specialised robots will become ubiquitous in people’s day-to-day lives, and August Robotics aspires to be at the forefront of this “robotics revolution”.
August Robotics was founded in Australia by Alex Wyatt, and now has presences in China (Hong Kong and Shenzhen) and Australia (Melbourne).
THE ROLE
As a hardware-orientated Robotics Engineer, you will be a member of August Robotics’ technical team. The role is a rare opportunity for technical enthusiasts looking to “get in at the ground floor” of a robotics start-up with extremely ambitious goals for the future.
You will participate in the full development life-cycle, from definition and design to product delivery. You will be responsible for integrating components and coding the motion controllers of the company’s robotic prototypes and products, and you will work on every level of the stack (sensors, motors, dynamics), from start-to-finish.
You will be expected to work in an agile environment, take ownership of sprints and keep up to date on new technologies. You should be an expert at using Robotic Operating System (ROS) tools to control robot motion, and you should be willing and able to train other members of the team in how to best utilise ROS and its associated functions.
You will also be expected to heavily contribute to the design and implementation of the hardware components of the company’s robots, including the design and implementation of the robot’s constituent electronics and electro-mechanical components, and driving those components using ROS. You will also be responsible for negotiating with suppliers, workshops and factories in the Shenzhen area to optimise project timelines and cost efficiencies.
The role will be based in Hong Kong, but will include frequent travel to August Robotics’ office in Shenzhen, China.
YOUR SKILLS
You must show:
- Degree from a top-tier University in Hong Kong or China (must be a 985 university, ideally a C9 university) or from overseas in Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science or a related discipline
- Expert level experience and familiarity with the Robotic Operating System (ROS), with recent experience that includes coding & developing robotic products, drivers or controllers in ROS
- Excellent communication skills and strong negotiation capabilities
- Familiarity with embedded systems (eg. Arduino) and general electrical engineering concepts
- Very good programming skills in Python (and its associated libraries)
- Native level fluency in Mandarin Chinese and comfort with simplified Chinese characters (spoken English is NOT required, but would be helpful)
In addition to the above requirements, which you must demonstrate, the following skills are helpful but not required:
- Familiarity with basic mechanical engineering tasks, such as Solidworks modelling and product design
- C++ programming skills
- Strong Linux (Raspian and/or Ubuntu) skills
- Experience with the agile / scrum methodology
It is ideal that you have at least 2 years work experience as a robotics engineer or in a similar role in which you used ROS heavily, and that you have practical exposure to one or more other elements of hardware product development (electrical, mechanical or control).
You should be comfortable with ambiguity and excited by the idea of working in an entrepreneurial culture. You should be willing to jump in and lend a hand on a range of different issues when the need arises.
