Many phenomena can be modelled by a power law, which is a kind of probability distribution. The main reason why power laws are so common is that they can be generated by a preferential attachment process (or "rich-get-richer" process). Knowing this will enable you to predict whether your data will follow a power law before seeing it, which will amaze your friends!
